NICK’S RULES
We live in a town called ‘Young Nick’. There are a lot of rules in public life here. The town is small but it is very beautiful. There are some historical places in the south of it. One day you should visit our town. It is cheap and there are small pensions in the centre.
I’m going to tell you about our rules in town called ‘Nick’s Rules’. For example you must be polite to people in public buses, in shopping centres, in banks etc …….
When you are at high school, you have to work in a hospital or another public place. You don’t earn money but you learn to live in Young Nick. It is just for a month and in school year.
At the traffic, there are very different rules from the others. For example the colours of the lights are different. At the pink light you have to stop. At the blue light you have to wait. At the brown light you have to pass.
At the weekend we have a traditional picnic called ‘Nick’s weekend’. You must come the forest with your family and must stay there for two hours.
We have got an advisor here called ‘Nick’s advisor’. Her name ise ‘Helen’ and she helps you with your health problems. If you are fat she says ‘you should go on a diet; If you have got a backache she says ‘you should see a doctor’; If you have got a toothache, she says ‘you should see a dentist’.
We always work for Young Nick and we ask questions to the people. ‘What else can we do or Young Nick?’ ‘What else do we have to do for tax income?’ ‘What else must we do for old people?’
Our town is going to be the best town in the country because we love Young Nick very much.

Üçü de zorunluluk anlatmak için kullanılan bu ifadelerin aralarında anlam farklılıkları vardır.
a. Must
İngilizce’de yapılması gerekli olan işleri anlatır.
Bunların yapılmaması durumunda belirli cezalar ya da yasal hükümler yoktur ancak toplum kuralları gereği uyulması gereklidir. Kişisel sorumluluk duygusu da ‘must’la kurulan cümleler için geçerlidir.
‘You must give your seat to old people in public buses’ cümlesinde kişinin yaşlı insanlara yer vermemesi durumunda cezaladırılması söz konusu değildir. Ancak yazılı olmayan toplum kurallarınca böyle yapması gerekir.
b. Have to / Has to
Yine zorunluluk anlatırlar. Yalnız bu zorunlulukların yerine gelmemesi durumunda kişi cezalandırılır.
‘You have to wear a shool uniform in public schools.’ cümlesinde kişinin okulda üniforma giymemesi durumunda cezalandırılacağının da bir iması vardır.

c. Should
Daha çok nasihat anlamında zorunluluk bildirir.
Yapmamanızın bir sakıncası ya da yaptırımı yoktur.
‘You should study hard if you want to pass the class’ cümlesinde kişi eğer sınıfını geçmek istiyorsa sıkı çalışmalıdır anlamı vardır. Ancak başka yollarla da sınıfını geçebilir. Bu cümleyi ‘must’n ile kurduğumuzda nasihatten çok baskı halini alabilir.
Aşağıdaki örneği dikkatle inceleyiniz.
1. Yalnız yaşayan dedenizin durumu sizi rahatsız etmektedir. Bulunduğunuz çevrede de yaşlı insanların ziyaret edilmesine önem verilmektedir. Bu durumda sizin için kullanılacak yapı ‘must’ olmalıdır.
‘You must visit your grandfather.’
2. Çok problem yaşadığınız bir dönemde yaşadığınız bir dönemde dertleşecek birine ihtiyacınız vardır. Bu durumda arkadaşlarınızdan biri size dedenizi ziyaret etmenizi öğütler.
‘You should visit your grandfather.’

3. Yaşlı dedeniz mirasını size bırakacağını ancak bunun onu belirli sıklıkla ziyaret etme kaydıyla gerçekleşeceğini söyler ve vasiyetine ekler. Bu durumda dedenizin avukatı size:
‘You have to visit your grandfather.’ der.
