Geçmişte olmuş ve bitmiş eylemlerden bahsetmek için kullandığımız zamandır. Bu anlamda ‘was, were’ ün kullanımı yansıtmaktadır. Ancak iki arasındaki fark Simple Past Tense’te esas fiil kullanılmasıdır.
Yardımcı fiil ‘did’ olan bu yapıda fiiler 2’ye ayrılır.

1. REGULAR VERBS (Düzenli Fiiller):

Fiil çekimi esnasında değişik hece kurallarına göre ‘–ed, – d ya da – ied’ alarak geçmiş zaman anlamı kazanan fiilerdir. Heceleme kuralları aşağıdaki gibidir.
a) Genel kural olarak tüm düzenli fiiler
– ed eki alırlar.
wash – washed wait – waited etc ….
b) Sonu – e ile biten fiiler yalnızca – d eki alırlar.
live – lived loved – loved etc ………..
c) Sonu consonant (sessiz harf) + y düşer ve –ied eklenir.

2. IRREGULAR VERBS (Düzensiz Fiiller)

Yukarıda bahsedilen kuralların hiç birine uymayan fiilerdir. Bu fiiller kitabın sonundaki Düzensiz Fiil tablosunda belirtilmiştir. Bunlardan bazıları şunlardır:
